Crafting Effective Prompts: A Step-by-Step Guide with an ICT Example

Written by Darryl Grauman, February 2024

Creating a good prompt is essential for getting responses that are relevant and thorough, whether in academic contexts, work-related conversations, or AI-enabled platforms. This guide explains how to design a prompt that is easy to understand, precise, and interesting, using the example of cybersecurity.

1. Define Your Objective

Have a specific goal for your prompt. This first step guides your investigation. For example, you might be interested in how well cybersecurity methods work in ICT.

2. Detail Matters

To get more precise responses, you can include more details. Make your objective more specific by looking at how certain cybersecurity measures, such as firewalls and encryption, protect confidential data in ICT systems.

3. Clarity is Crucial

Your prompt should be straightforward and easy to understand. For example, "Discuss how cybersecurity measures like firewalls and encryption protect sensitive data in ICT environments."

4. Contextualise

Incorporate relevant context if your prompt is part of a broader discussion or project. This ensures the responses are pertinent. For instance, "Considering the rising incidents of cyber attacks, evaluate how effective firewalls and encryption are in protecting sensitive data in ICT systems."

5. Avoid Ambiguity

Make sure your prompt is clear and specific to prevent confusion. For example, "In light of increasing cyber threats, analyse the role of specific cybersecurity measures—namely firewalls and encryption—in defending sensitive information within ICT systems."

6. Specify Requirements

Make sure to specify any special conditions for the response, such as how long, how to write, or which point of view, to use. For instance, "Provide a 750-word essay evaluating the effectiveness of firewalls and encryption in securing sensitive data in ICT systems, referencing recent cyber attack case studies."

7. Stimulate Creativity

Frame your prompt in a way that encourages creative or analytical thinking. For example, "Design a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy for an ICT system in a 750-word proposal, focusing on firewalls, encryption, and other innovative measures, supported by examples from recent cyber attack incidents."

8. Iterate for Improvement

Refine your prompt based on the feedback and types of responses you receive. For instance, "Develop a detailed 750-word cybersecurity strategy proposal for an ICT system, emphasising the integration of firewalls, encryption, and novel security measures. Draw upon recent cyber attack case studies to illustrate your approach."

Example Evolution of a Prompt
  • Initial Objective: Investigate cybersecurity effectiveness in ICT.
  • Detailed Inquiry: Examine the protection offered by firewalls and encryption against data breaches.
  • Clear Question: "How do firewalls and encryption contribute to data security in ICT systems?"
  • Contextualised: "Given the surge in cyber attacks, assess the protection firewalls and encryption provide to ICT systems."
  • Clarified to Avoid Ambiguity: "Analyse the effectiveness of firewalls and encryption in safeguarding ICT systems against the backdrop of rising cyber threats."
  • Specified Requirements: "Write a 750-word essay on the role of firewalls and encryption in ICT security, citing examples from recent cyber attacks."
  • Creativity-Encouraging: "Craft a 750-word cybersecurity strategy for ICT, focusing on firewalls, encryption, and new measures, with insights from recent cyber incidents."
  • Final Refined Prompt: "Compose a 750-word proposal outlining a cybersecurity strategy for an ICT system, highlighting the use of firewalls, encryption, and innovative security solutions, informed by recent cyber-attack case studies."

Feel free to enter the final prompt into Microsoft Copilot, Google Bard or Open AI’s GPT models and see the results for yourself. It is worth noting that the outcomes determined by a particular service may vary, even when provided with the exact same prompt. Consistency and accuracy remain obstacles in the young world of AI; therefore, it is critical to develop effective prompts to guarantee consistent and high-quality results.

But wait, there’s more…. Please read and comprehend what the AI has produced for you before you put your name to it. Ensure that the context, grammar, wording, and content are consistent with YOU, not the AI who has spoken for you.
