How FinOps is Shaping Cloud Cost Management

Written by Toni Southon, June 2025

In today’s digital landscape, businesses increasingly rely on cloud infrastructure to drive innovation and scalability. However, unchecked cloud spending quickly erodes budgets, making Financial Operations (FinOps) essential to optimize and manage costs on an ongoing basis. As a cultural and operational framework, FinOps aligns cloud spending with business value, ensuring efficiency, transparency, and accountability.

For managed service providers (MSPs), FinOps enables proactive cost management by integrating financial accountability into cloud operations. According to the FinOps Foundation 2024 State of FinOps Report, 68% of organizations adopting FinOps saw improved cost efficiency within six months.

  • With real-time analytics, usage is monitored, waste identified, and actions taken – such as rightsizing instances, availability scheduling or using commercial instruments such as savings plans & reserved instances, directly reducing costs.
  • Cloud cost optimization strengthens trust. Your expectation should be consistent value delivery (rather than ‘invoice delivery’) on the back of technical expertise. FinOps ensures transparency through appropriately detailed cost reporting and forecasting, aligning expenses with business outcomes.
  • FinOps mitigates the complexity of multi-cloud environments. As hybrid or multi-cloud strategies become the norm, cost sprawl becomes a risk. FinOps provides a unified approach to track and allocate costs across platforms, ensuring no dollar is wasted.

Tools like AWS Cost Explorer, Azure Cost Management, or third-party solutions like Vantage, combined with FinOps practices, pinpoint inefficiencies including underutilized resources.

And there’s a lot to gain: Deloitte predicts US$21 billion may be saved by companies implementing FinOps tools and practices in 2025 alone.

Finally, FinOps drives innovation. Why? An optimized budget means more resources for transformative technologies like AI.
