AWS selects Lancom Technology as key partner for New Zealand Region launch

Written by Lancom Technology, March 2025

Cloud services across the Pacific are increasingly receiving upgrades that boost resilience, performance and accessibility. Coupled with New Zealand’s already impeccable fiber network, the launch of an Amazon Web Services (AWS) Asia Pacific (New Zealand) Region with Lancom Technology as a key launch partner further enhances cloud capability, with an expectation of increased service access, resilience and performance.

Lancom Technology CEO Priscila Bernardes shares her enthusiasm: “Being chosen as a launch partner for the AWS New Zealand Region is a proud moment. This opportunity builds on our decade of AWS expertise, providing access to resources like the Custom Fund and exclusive events to help customers migrate seamlessly and innovate with confidence—all while keeping their data in New Zealand.”

An AWS Region is a physical location where Amazon Web Services (AWS) operates multiple data centers called Availability Zones (AZs). Each Region is fully independent and isolated, designed to provide high availability, fault tolerance, and scalability for cloud services as part of the AWS global network. Every Region contains at least two Availability Zones, separate data centers within the same Region, linked by low-latency connections. If one AZ goes down, the other keeps applications running smoothly.

AWS operates 36 Regions and 90 AZs worldwide, spanning North America, Europe, Asia, with the New Zealand Region and AZs joining the network. The new Region equips AWS partners to deploy services close to customers for better performance including lower latency and increased resilience.

Bernardes says the establishment of an AWS Region is a milestone strengthening AWS’s decade-long presence in New Zealand, where it already serves thousands of customers. “The new region features three AZs in Auckland and delivers enhanced resilience, security, and data residency for Kiwi businesses,” she notes.

The AWS New Zealand Region Custom Fund is a financial initiative designed to support customers and partners in leveraging the upcoming AWS Asia Pacific (New Zealand) Region. Part of AWS' $7.5 billion investment, the fund provides migration support, partner enablement, and marketing assistance to ensure a seamless transition to the new region. It aims to enhance local capabilities, ensure data residency, and improve resilience through three Availability Zones, while contributing to job creation and GDP growth.

As an Advanced AWS Consulting Partner with over 10 years of collaboration, Bernardes says Lancom Technology will leverage the partnership to support customers transitioning to the new region. “With our access to the Custom Fund, we’re looking forward to working with our existing and new customers alongside AWS to deliver even better solutions aligned with their objectives and business goals.”

The AWS New Zealand Region aligns with the country’s growing need for robust, local cloud infrastructure. A standout for this particular Region is the intention of running it on 100% renewable energy, backed by AWS’s agreement with Mercury NZ for the Turitea South wind farm, supporting New Zealand’s sustainability goals.

Manuel Bohnot, AWS NZ Country Manager, praises the partnership: “Lancom Technology has been working with AWS for over a decade.  We appreciate their collaboration as well as their proven track record of delivering tangible business results and innovation for customers, including creating new applications, leveraging advanced services such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, and migrating, optimising, and modernizing workloads. We look forward to building on this and helping customers leverage the benefits of the AWS New Zealand Region, including increased resilience and security with data residency and lower latency.”

For Lancom, the collaboration amplifies its mission. “AWS has been transformative for our clients,” Bernardes says. “With this region, we’ll empower more businesses to thrive securely and compete on a global stage, right here from Aotearoa.”
