About DG Law
With a lengthy engagement reaching back more than a decade, Lancom Technology has firmly established its credibility and capability in looking after the technology needs of Auckland firm DG Law. Over a period where the technology requirements of legal firms have changed dramatically, Lancom Technology has delivered consistent and reliable support, culminating in specifying, configuring and deploying cloud infrastructure in support of DG Law’s migration to a new practice management solution.
Founded in 1984 by David Graham in a small office in Panmure, DG Law now has a team of some 20 lawyers, legal professionals and dedicated support staff delivering a broad range of legal expertise. Services offered by the firm include Business/Commercial, Property, Family, and Employment Law, Enduring Powers of Attorney, Relationship Property, Wills, Trusts, Court Services, and Estates. The company also offers a unique ‘Mobile Lawyer’ service, and prides itself on the delivery of multilingual law for the Chinese community.
Situation
Joining DG Law in 2014, practice manager Brandon Tam says much had already changed in terms of how the legal profession operates since the company’s founding in 1984. “However, the biggest adjustments probably came in those 10 years since I came on board,” he notes.
The increasing advantages of and subsequent shift to digital operations to which Brandon is referring have meant that work previously done by pen and paper is replaced by online and mobile-accessible services. “That extends to the practice management software, which we depend on more and more. And the reality is, onsite servers and the reliability or otherwise of those is hard to stomach.”
Particularly, he adds, when a law firm employs lawyers rather than IT specialists. “We’re at a size where we’re highly dependent on our technology systems to get the job done, but we can’t afford to employ someone with the breadth and depth of skills necessary for effective support.”
Solution
With Lancom Technology, Brandon says DG Law receives the support and guidance necessary to make technology ‘as it should be’. He references the ongoing consumerisation of technology, where complexity is in the background so people using various systems don’t have to worry about it: “There’s a lot that happens in the background, even with simple services like a fax machine – yes, lawyers still use faxes! – if, for example, the connectivity isn’t secure and always on, it doesn’t work.”
There’s much more to it, Brandon continues, including in-office and mobile devices used by the company’s lawyers, and the various applications and services required for daily productivity. “Over more than 10 years, we’ve simply, entrusted that to Lancom, so we get complete peace of mind,” he explains. “And when we moved offices some time ago, their knowledge of our systems and ways of working made the technology aspect of that easy and efficient.”
When the company migrated to a new hybrid practice management suite, with the main application hosted online communicating with agents installed on individual devices, it was again to Lancom that DG Law turned. Handling the configuration and deployment of Microsoft Azure virtual servers and associated supporting infrastructure made for a smooth rollout of the software, further enabling the law firm’s workers for efficient mobile working.
Results
The availability of specialists for support and configuration delivers peace of mind for daily operations, confirms Brandon. “There’s another crucial aspect, too. As a law firm, we routinely deal with sensitive and highly private information. With its expertise, Lancom Technology provides best practice security for access and data protection, at a level we probably couldn’t do ourselves.”
He also credits Lancom for around the clock monitoring of the company’s IT environment and services from security, performance, and capacity perspectives. “That’s essential in an efficiently running practice, so our associates can get on with their work.”
It is, Brandon again stresses, routinely about the things in the background which keep things working. “A lot of that stuff is crucial, like Multifactor Authentication, email domains, backups, images for our computers, but also stuff we really don’t want to know about beyond knowing it is done well,” he explains. “With Lancom, the real benefit is all of that isn’t just done properly, it is done well.”
