About Orion Health and Lancom Technology
Orion Health is a New Zealand-based global software company that delivers and sells healthcare software. It provides the software for healthcare providers from integration through to population health management and precision medicine. It has more than 450 customers in 25 countries and over 600 staff globally.
Lancom Technology (the Partner) is a leading IT company serving Australia and New Zealand, specialising in providing software development, cloud services, managed services and data and insights. Lancom is a proud Advanced AWS Consulting Partners and holds ISO 27001 certification.
Customer Challenge
While the software applications it provides are developed and hosted in AWS, Orion Health had its operational and business support systems hosted in Microsoft Azure as a quirk of organic growth. With an obvious opportunity for consolidation and standardization, the company engaged Lancom Technology for a migration of all workloads to AWS. With strict governance measures governing the delivery of healthcare in the United States and other territories, particular attention on security and compliance was necessary in the migration.
With some 49 server workloads on virtual machine environments in Azure, the migration would move into serverless Platform as a Service on AWS, aligning with Orion Health’s strategy for its software products.
At the same time, the consolidation exercise presented an opportunity for reviewing security and resilience measures, maturing Orion Health’s IT and support systems for better business continuity.
Partner Solution
Over the course of nine months, Lancom Technology applied its proven Migration and Modernization Customer Journey to assess, mobilize, migrate and modernize Orion Health’s infrastructure across 7 global locations. The Assess phase uses Lancom’s Migration Evaluator for the creation of a Rapid Migration Business Case (including rapid discovery, briefings and workshops, an Immersion Day and a TCO Report). The Mobilize phase results in a business case and operating model, and migration plan to the landing zone. Finally, Migrate and Mobilize transfers workloads from Azure into AWS, commencement of operations, and modernization where necessary.
Primary AWS services used include:
- VPC + Transit Gateway + VPN with AWS RAM
VPC paired with Transit Gateway and VPN connections provides network connectivity between private/public networks in AWS and connectivity to head offices and global branch offices.
AWS RAM configured to share the Transit Gateway between AWS accounts.
- Network load balancer
Network load balancer provides front end connectivity, with traffic routed to relevant containers based on network port.
- ECS + ECR
ECS Fargate runs containers in AWS. ECS configured to use ECR as a container image storage/repository.
- RDS
RDS MySQL hosts two different databases used by applications running on the containers.
- EFS
EFS configured and deployed as persistent shared storage used by containers for configuration and application storage.
- AWS Backup
AWS Backup configured for long term backups of EFS and RDS databases.
- CloudWatch Logs
Containers configured to send application logs to CloudWatch.
The solution design was performed in AWS Terraform. Through the migration process, deficiencies in the Azure configuration were identified and addressed. Notably, critical internal IT infrastructure was running on a single VM running multiple containers. This single point of failure was addressed with serverless containers in Fargate for a resilience gain.
Results and Benefits
With consolidated infrastructure, Orion Health benefits from a single set of skills focused on the AWS platform of choice. Those supporting internal IT infrastructure can now work on the line of business applications where necessary, and vice versa, for more flexible staffing. The reconfigured network is more flexible and provides seamless global inter-office connectivity, while there is headroom for further development as required.
